Tibetan life is centered around their Buddhist beliefs. The gompa or temple is the most important place in any Tibetan person. It can be concluded that every Tibetan is a Buddhist. A few Tibetan refugees who has left the country have converted into other religion. I met a Christian in Pokhara, Nepal who was a refugee when she was seven.
Litang gompa sits on a hilltop and getting to it took some effort because of the high altitude. All three of us are now training for next year's trip back to the area. I've been running up a hill whenever I can.
Every family is supposed to send a son to join the monastery. I don't know how old they need to be, maybe as soon as they've been toilet trained. Here is a very young monk to be.
A thousand Buddha statues adorn the walls of this room. Everything about Tibetan Buddhism is colorful and dramatic and this contributes to their charm.
