Kangding, Sichuan province

Relaxing at Zhilam hostel, run by an American expatriate, decorated with Tibetan motifs.
The hostel was at the top of a hill and the climb to it plus the high altitude made it like climbing Mt Everest. Now I really know what its like to walk up hill in a high altitude plateau. Kangding was just a little foretaste of what was to come. "kanding' is Chinese for love ballards, supposedly this town is famous for their ballards. The Tibetan name is 'Darttdenso'.

Kangding was a seven bus ride from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. Here at Zhilam hostel, we met other backpackers, we exchanged travel stories or it was they who regaled us with their stories, we'd only just arrived. It was a pity we didn't have more time for Kangding, we only used it as a jumping off point to go deeper into this part of Tibet. There were a few monasteries in the hills, prayer flags covered the hills and one knows they're in Tibet.
