Not all frescoes

Not all the rock-cut churches are painted with figurative frescoes, a few are just simply painted with red cross hatch patterns. They are still beautiful. The conjecture is they never leave any church unadorned, they paint these red patterns on them till a time when the funds are available to have the whole painted with frescoes. Some are left this way for centuries, maybe the funds were never found to paint them otherwise. This is a very simple red pattern, there are some with more intricate red patterns like St Barbara church in Goreme open air museum. Despite spending 3 whole days in Cappadocia, we still couldn't find the time to see the churches in Goreme open air museum. That is why I don't have a single picture of the churches in the open air museum, they are very distinct, you see them in every official publication of Cappadocia. This is among the most amazing place in the world.
