Almost to the end of the trip

This was the first time we saw life stock, here is a herd of sheep across the road as we were passing, on our way from Soganli and heading back to Goreme. Bernd pointed out the rail tracks. At that time I didn't realise the significance of the rail tracks. This is part of the Berlin to Baghdad railway tracks that the Germans were building for the Turks during the first world war when Germany and Turkey were collaborators. It was on the same tracks that the box cars were used to deport some of the Armenians during the Armenian genocide. Those 'lucky' enough were deported on railway box cars, others have to trudge through the harsh environment of South Eastern Turkey to the desert in Der Zor and to Aleppo in Syria. Many died along the way from starvation, torture and disease.

There was a time when this area was littered with the mangled and rotting bodies of the Armenians during the Armenian genocide. Many were just hacked to death because shooting them is expensive, the bullets were expensive.
I have Armenian friends who wouldn't let the word 'Turkey' cross their lips......
