St Basil church

This is quite possibly painted during the iconoclast period, hence the patterned design and the ancient Greek writing. It makes for an interesting variation to all the churches we've visited. We were supposed to stay 2 days in Cappadocia, leave the third day for Kayseri where we have an early flight on the fourth day. We ended staying 3 days in Cappadocia, left very early in the morning on the fourth day because there was an all night shuttle between Goreme and Kayseri airport. A lot of churches are named in honor of St Basil, one of the three Cappadocian fathers who attended the various church councils to defend the deity of Jesus Christ in concert with the official church and state position in Constantinople. A lot of times the village priests, probably even Basil, his brother Gregory and their friend, another Gregory (they form the three Cappadocian fathers) wants to curry favor with Constantinople and they take the official church position. Anyway the result was the Nicene creed, something we recited at every church service, it's a document of the Christian faith, what we believe, it starts with 'I believe....'
