The call of the Muezzin

Five times a day, the muezzin's call to prayer from the top of the minaret reminds people of the Islamic faith to prayer. We've been in Cairo and was at the citadel at noon when the call to prayer rang out and the whole of Cairo is enveloped in the call. It was a really magical moment. Most call are short and sweet, even the ones at 5 am. Sometimes one just sleeps through the whole call. If anyone has been in Fes for any length of time will notice that the call to prayer is different. The ones in the day time seems to go by unnoticed but the one at 4.30am is hard to miss. It goes on for an hour and is very different. I've been woken up both nights that we spent in Fes. First the call from a few mosques goes out and they form a kind of back ground chorus. Then the main man sings his chant, all the time the others are doing their background chorus. It is very mournful and almost beautiful (if it's not at such an ungodly hour and for so long).
