The tanneries, Fes

We wanted to see the tannery and some guy asked us to follow him up some steps. We wondered why we were to go up high, he said, you'll get a better view from on top. Indeed, one can see the tannery from down below at the same level because there was a door to the tannery and we saw the donkeys waiting there to haul the stinky stuff out of the tannery. Anyway we climbed up to the roof of a bulding and we were handed some fresh mint leaves. At first I wondered what the mint was for, then I realised it was to mask the bad smell emanating from those vats. Sophie had a cold, she couldn't smell a thing, she just walked into the thick of things. I was hit with the worst and most foul smell I've ever experienced in my life. Phew, the smell was so bad even with the mint stuck deep in my nostrils. They use pigeon poop and some other kind of poop to treat the leather. It just stinks to high heaven. The whole place is surrounded by houses and I wonder how they live like that. The people working there are just stomping in and out of those vats like it's nothing. That was an interesting adventure.
