Old Fes

'A house in Fez' by Suzanna Clarke is a book I'm reading now. I should have read this before I left, I'd probably looked her up and visited Riad Zany. Maybe next time. Suzanna Clarke and her husband fell in love with Fes and bought an old Riad in the old medina of Fes. She documented their adventures in restoring this riad. "...although the Medina is the best-preserved medieval walled city in the world, is architectural heritage is under threat. Many Moroccans cannot afford to maintain the houses they live in, let alone restore them to their original splendor". Most Moroccans with money prefer the newer areas where the new houses have all the mod cons already built in. So this leaves the foolish foreigners to buy up these old properties and pour money into restoring them. This goes on a lot in Marrakech where a lot of these riads have been restored and are now being rented out to visitors. We stayed in a riad in Marrakech.
