Fes is divided into three areas, Fes el-Bali is the oldest and the only one that we ventured into. The newer, el-jdid is the Mellah or the Jewish quarter and the third is the new city, thoroughly modern and it is spreading all the way out into the hills. The area outside the two old Medina is covered with fields planted with fruit trees, olive groves and at this time (Spring) it is covered with colorful and glorious wildflowers. The new city also has lots of modern home development that our taxi driver was quick to point out, lots of expensive homes. These hills are actually moyen Atlas or Middle Atlas. Atlas is the name given to the mountain range that runs north to south in Morroco. We would take a trip to middle Atlas the next day of our arrival. In the meantime we would hang out in the old medina.Everything is carried in and out by donkeys and every now and then the call goes out to make way for the donkeys. I've come to love those donkeys.
