Giacomo Serpotta

When one visits Palermo, one artist's name would stand out. He is a sculptor who is so talented, he could sculpt clay and make it look like marble and his work is in most churches in Palermo. In fact, the visitors bureau has an arranged Serpotta itinerary for anyone interested in his work. His most famous and delightful work is in this chapel and on this wall. Here he has sculpted a playful scene of the life of Christ. It is the most delightful work I've every seen. If I ever return to Palermo I would sign up for the Serpotta itinerary. Sicily, being separated form mainland Italy has developed its own style of art and architecture and really rewards the intrepid visitor.
