Kugelhopf
Finally after all the years of staring at pictures of kugelhopf, in 2009, I tasted my first kugelhopf in Strasbourg, France and then again in Demel in Vienna, Austria. In France it is more like a brioche bread. In Vienna it is a sponge cake but baked in a fluted pan. I think it originated or else the fluted pan, originated in Austria as the story goes. Merisi will be able to correct me if I'm wrong (http://www.viennaforbeginners.com))/ It is shaped like an Ottoman head dress turned upside down. It is to celebrate the beating back of the Ottoman Turks at the gates of Vienna. So don't look at a kugelhopf the same again like it is an ordinary confection. It symbolises something, a historical event!
