Gythio

The water is so clear. It's always surprising for us Southern Californians to see clear water. The sea in the Santa Monica bay is so murky, it doesn't even sparkle in the sun. Here we could see little fishes swimming and the sea urchins stuck to the under water rocks.

The only thing interesting about Gythio were the octopus hanging out to dry on a line. I took some pictures and made a few sketches and realised that was it. So we jumped on the next bus and went to Areopoli, not that we knew what was in Areopoli. We didn't. It's one of those things in traveling, you are in town on a Sunday or a public holiday and you're hard pressed to find some place interesting to visit or something exciting to do. We asked the hotel people in Sparta what to do on a Sunday, the lady said, 'go to the beach', Gythio, she meant. It was the seaside alright, a sleepy little fishing village, one hour by bus from Sparta. We went back to the bus station to wait for the next bus to take us to Areopoli. From Areopoli there would be another later bus that will take us back to Sparta. In going anywhere we always ask about the way to return, when's the last bus, where do we catch it?
