a jumble of Byzantine churches
Perched against this massive rock are a collection of old Byzantine churches, some are just a pile of stones. The ones that are intact were locked shut. I guess there are no church people here to take care of the churches. I read that in other monasteries, the local priest usually has the key to the churches and would open them for visitors. There was no one in Monemvasia and the local tourists office said that even the famed Hagia Sophia is closed. That was sad, it was the Hagia Sophia that I wanted to see. As we climbed the steep paths of Monemvasia, I had a feeling that we might not even find the Hagia Sophia. It could be in any part of this massive rock and we didn't have enough time to explore the whole rock. In an hour or so, we need to climb down and walk back to the village to take the last bus back to Sparta. It's just one of those things when we travel, not everything would be opened for us to visit and we just have to contend with it.
