Off to Tian Shan

Our group consisted of mostly visitors from other parts of China. With the new economy comes new found wealth and the Chinese people begin to have more money to buy stuff, more food and even to travel to see the other parts of China. The majority of tourists in China are Chinese from other parts. Here we are a really mixed group from all over China. It was enlightening to know where they came from and to chat with them. We met two women from Shanghai who were Muslims. One of them was really feisty, true to the Shanghai spirit. Shanghai people are spirited and feisty, don't mess with them, they can be nasty.

Tian Shan or Heavenly mountain is the mountain range that splits Xinjiang into the Northern and the Southern half. The North is lush while the South is the desert. Most if not all explorers in the past have regular encounters with Tian Shan including Sven Hedin and Ella Maillart. There are a few pristine lakes in the mountains, the biggest being Tianchi or Heavenly lake. The mini van took us up to the mountain and there at the entrance the park people took over and we explored the whole area on wheels. It was great.
